Kale chips are one of my favorite snacks! If you’ve ever purchased a bag of kale chips in the store, you know that they can be pretty pricey, too. They are really easy to make, so here are some flavor ideas. You’ll need one bunch of kale for each idea. I put mine in the dehydrator overnight (at 105-110 degrees), but you can also make ’em super quick in your oven, like below. I store each batch in a gallon bag and take smaller portions when I want them.
Destem the kale leaves; you can save the stems for smoothies or veggie stock!
Chop leaves into large pieces – not too small, because they will shrink.
Mix with the following ideas:
1. olive oil, sea salt and pepper; add red pepper flakes for a kick!
2. olive oil, sea salt and pepper; add nutritional yeast for a cheese-y flavor!
3. olive oil and curry or cumin
4. olive oil, sea salt, and crushed garlic
5. get creative and experiment with your own combinations!
Put ingredients in a bowl and use your hands to mix. You don’t want them too oily, so add olive oil as you go and just enough to coat. Put them on a cookie tray and bake at 425 degrees for about 5 minutes or until they start to brown, turning halfway through. Be sure to keep an eye on these, because they can burn fast!
If you want to get even more involved, flavor-wise, you can make some really amazing-tasting chips. Here’s on that I love that is nutritionally powerful AND tastes like cheeeeeze:
mix leaves of 1 bunch kale with
1/2 c. tahini paste
3-4 lemons, juiced
1/4 c. olive oil
1/4 c. nutritional yeast
2 cloves garlic, minced
sea salt and chili flakes to taste
(then bake or dehydrate until crisp)
