Depression Sucks.
You’re either crying at the drop of a hat, or you’re shut down, numb, and it’s tough to feel any emotions at all.
It’s embarrassing to admit, but sometimes even getting out of bed and getting dressed feels like too much. You’re tired all the time, even when you’re sleeping way more than usual, or maybe because you’re not sleeping at all.
Everything feels so freaking heavy.
The things you used to enjoy have lost their pull. They take too much energy, anyway.
You feel so lonely, but you don’t even want to hang out with your friends. You feel sorry for your family. They say they love you, but who’d love such a mess? You feel like a total burden, like who’d want to spend time with you?
Besides, everyone annoys the shit out of you anyway.
Your mind isn’t working the way it used to.
You’re forgetting things. You’re easily overwhelmed. It’s almost impossible to focus. You feel like a failure. Your work is slipping, and don’t even get me started on your home. Everything feels like such a mess, literally and figuratively.
Your coping skills, frankly, suck. Staying in bed all day, avoiding phone calls, procrastinating everything. You might be eating way more than you usually do, or way less. Maybe your drinking has increased. Regardless, you’re certainly not taking good care of yourself, but honestly, you don’t even give a crap.
You don’t want to die, but sometimes you can’t help wondering if things would be better…
You’re restless, but for what? All you know is that you’re tired of feeling so stuck. You want more than anything to feel like yourself again, but it’s hard to imagine things ever being different.
This isn’t the regular blues, sister. And this has gone on long enough.
No one seems to get it, the way that you’re feeling now. Certainly not those a-holes on Instagram.
But oh, I get it. I’ve been there so many times. I know the depths of darkness and how impossible and far away the light can seem.
You want the pain to go away. You have some stuff to work through, but you want to be sure you can do the work and feel stronger on the other side.
You want to know that there’s an end in sight, to believe that things will get better.
You want to learn how to ask for what you need, but not feel like a total drag. You want your relationships to get back on track, or you want to make new ones that bring out your best instead of keep you down.
You want to remember what it’s like to feel confident, secure, and more assertive (or to feel that way for the first time).
It would also be nice to have some energy, some oomph, and to smile again.
You are not the problem. But depression is a sign that something is wrong.
Your pain makes sense.
